The Dream of Aerospace Engineering!
A.P.J Abdul Kalam Ji earned success not just because he dreamt it, he worked hard for it. Kalam moved to Madras in 1955 to study aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology. While he was working on a class project, the Dean of the institution was dissatisfied with his lack of progress and threatened to revoke his scholarship unless the project was finished within the next three days. Kalam met the deadline, impressing the Dean, who later said to him, "I was putting you under stress and asking you to meet a difficult deadline."" Later, he narrowly missed out on his dream of becoming a fighter pilot, as he placed ninth in qualifiers and only eight positions were available in the Indian Air Force.
Journey to Success!
After graduating from MIT in 1960, Kalam Ji became a member of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) as a Scientist. APJ Abdul Kalam’s experience with DRDO was a defining phase in his life and career. He joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation as a scientist and worked with great dedication on advanced defence technologies, especially in the field of missile development. His work at DRDO involved research in propulsion, aerospace engineering, and missile systems, where he contributed to the growth of India’s indigenous defence capabilities. It was during this period that he gained widespread recognition for his scientific brilliance, leadership, and commitment to innovation. His efforts at DRDO played a vital role in India’s journey toward self-reliance in missile technology and strengthened his reputation as a visionary scientist. Later, he joined the Indian National Committee for Space Research, working under renowned space scientist Vikram Sarabhai. He was interviewed and recruited into Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) by H. G. S. Murthy, the first director of the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station. After joining India’s space program, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam joined INCOSPAR in 1962 and later moved to ISRO in 1969. Kalam faced many difficulties, including limited facilities, lack of advanced technology, shortage of funds, and an inexperienced team. The first SLV-III launch failed in 1979, but he and his team learned from their mistakes. On 18 July 1980, the launch vehicle successfully placed the Rohini satellite into orbit, making India capable of launching its own satellites.
The SLV-III Project

The BrahMos Missile

Chandrayaan 1: Into the Moon!

Inspired by his advice, ISRO made crucial design modifications and added the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) to the payload. On November 14, 2008, the MIP detached from the main orbiter and crashed into the lunar surface near the South Pole, making India the fifth space agency to reach the Moon. As the probe descended, its instruments analyzed the lunar atmosphere and recorded the crucial initial evidence of water molecules on the Moon—turning Kalam's insightful suggestion into a landmark scientific discovery for humankind.
Journey towards the President of India !
After his successful career at ISRO, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam returned to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), where he played an important role in India’s missile and nuclear programs. He became known as the “Missile Man of India” and received the Bharat Ratna in 1997. Because of his achievements, dedication, and popularity among the people, he was nominated for the presidency by the National Democratic Alliance. In 2002, he was elected as the 11th President of India and served from 2002 to 2007. He was admired as the “People’s President” because of his humility and close connection with students and ordinary citizens. He focused on inspiring young people, promoting education, scientific development, and encouraging citizens to help build a developed India. He regularly visited schools, colleges, and universities, where he interacted with students and answered their questions. Kalam also used technology to connect with people across the country and shared his vision through his book Ignited Minds. Although he lived in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, he remained simple, humble, and approachable. He did not seek a second term and left office in 2007, continuing to teach and inspire students until the end of his life.
Post Presidency
Following his presidency in 2007, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam gracefully stepped away from the trappings of political power to embrace what he considered his true calling: becoming a full-time educator and mentor to the youth. Refusing a quiet retirement, he threw himself into relentless travel, serving as a visiting professor across prestigious institutions—including the Indian Institutes of Management in Shillong, Ahmedabad, and Indore, the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, and Anna University—where he interacted with over five million students to ignite their scientific curiosity and national pride. True to his selfless spirit, he spent his final years writing, lecturing, and advocating for a developed India. On July 27, 2015, while doing precisely what he loved most—delivering a lecture on "Creating a Liveable Planet Earth" to students at IIM Shillong—he collapsed due to a sudden cardiac arrest and passed away at the age of 83. His death triggered an unprecedented wave of national grief, and he was laid to rest with full state honors in his hometown of Rameswaram, leaving behind a legacy of a teacher who literally gave his very last breath to the future of his country.
